Jean-Jacques Kantorow

Jean-Jacques Kantorow has family roots in Russia but was born in Cannes, France. He took violin lessons there, but when he was 13 he moved to Paris to study at the conservatory. He gained a qualification in the violin after just one year of study. Kantorow has won dozens of violin competitions and has appeared all over the world. He has had the dual career of violin soloist and conductor, having directed several foreign orchestras. Kantorow was Artistic Director of the Tapiola Sinfonietta from 1993 to 1999, and its permanent conductor from 2000 to 2006. From 2004 to 2008 he was Artistic Director of the City of Granada Orchestra. Kantorow has also been Artistic Director of the Orchestre d'Auvergne, the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra and l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. He was the first foreigner to receive the Espoo Medal in 2003. In spring 2011 the Tapiola Sinfonietta named him its Honorary Conductor in recognition of their long-term collaboration.
