Svante Henryson

Svante Henryson

Svante Henryson is from Umeå in Sweden. When younger he was a rock bass player, who then took up jazz. Talent and hard work led to his becoming principal bass with the Oslo Philharmonic, but Henryson wanted something else. He and his electric bass joined guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen’s band in the USA, where he also played cello. Today Henryson is one of the leading bass players in the Nordic countries and collaborates across genres and national borders. He is also familiar as a solo cellist and chamber musician whose partners have included Martin Fröst and Anne Sofie von Otter. In recent years this multi-instrumentalist has gained a reputation as a composer too, his works including an award-winning work for solo violin and his oratorio ’Vidderna inom mig’ to a text by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää. Henryson was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2015 and is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
