MUSIC COURSES

The music courses will mainly be run in two sessions: 12–17.7 and 19–24.7.

1. Masterclasses for piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn and accordion.
Lessons will be 5 x 45 min.

2. Masterclasses for chamber music
Tuition in chamber music for ready-formed ensembles. Teachers Levon Chilingirian, Johannes Meissl, Daniel Quartet and Storioni Trio. All teachers also provide chamber music tuition. Chamber music masterclass will consist of four sessions in all, each lasting 60 minutes.

3. Chamber music workshops
The workshops are intended for players taking part in the masterclasses and they are free of charge.

Teachers: Ilkka Puputti (French horn) & Jason Fisher (viola), Levon Chilingirian (violin), Atte Kilpeläinen (viola) and Zoran Marković (double bass). Students in the workshop will prepare chamber works for performance at the concerts on July 17 and 24. The workshop leaders will play in the ensemble. Those attending Ilkka Puputti’s & Jason Fisher’s and Levon Chilingirian’s workshop should be prepared to be in Kuhmo at least for the period July 13–17 July and Atte Kilpeläinen’s and Zoran Marković’s workshop during July 20–24.

4. Sonata Lab
Are you currently learning a particular sonata or other work of chamber music with piano? Join pianist Sophia Rahman for a deep dive into the details of the score and the ensemble-playing challenges it presents. At the Sonata Lab, you will develop your own instincts for musical interaction, gain fresh perspectives on how to shape a work, and learn invaluable tools for working on your own part. 5. Improvisation Workshop
Unleash your hidden potential in the world of improvisation! Kuhmo Chamber Music’s improvisation workshop is for anyone with a sense of adventure and who interested in the world of improvisation. At this workshop, we will explore ways of using the basic structures of music as the building blocks for improvisation. The aim of this course is to allow participants to explore improvisation in small groups and to harness these experiences in their own chamber and solo playing. No previous experience necessary!

Leading the group improvisation workshop is accordion virtuoso Niko Kumpuvaara. The workshop consists of two two-hour sessions on 15th and 16th July. Participation is free for masterclass students.

5. Instrument Lectures
Throughout the music courses, string players and pianists will have the opportunity to attend our ‘Instrument Info’ lectures, where they can explore the inner workings of their instruments in a more informal and in-depth setting. These sessions will be led by the bow and violin makers Armin Seebass and Elina Kaljunen and the concert piano turner Matti Kyllönen. These lectures are free for masterclass participants.

Additional fee for private tuition for ensemble member €245/person

The fees include tuition, possible participation in chamber music workshops, improvisation workshop, instruments lectures, concerts, meals and accommodation (seven nights) in classroom with no more than eight people in it.

The paid course fee will not be refunded.

Students should arrive in Kuhmo no later than on the day before tuition begins, and departure is on the day after the last day of teaching.
