Lydia Kavina

Lydia Kavina

Lydia Kavina began studying the theremin aged nine under the direction of Léon Theremin, who developed the instrument and was a relation. She also studied piano, music theory and composition at the Moscow Conservatory. Kavina has performed as soloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, among others. She has worked in theatrical productions, been featured on film soundtracks and recorded music for the theremin for several record labels. Kavina is keen to present new music for the theremin and also composes for the instrument herself. Her Concerto for Theremin and Orchestra had its first performance with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project under Gil Rose in 1997. Kavina regularly teaches on masterclass programmes and at the theremin academies in Germany, Switzerland and the UK. She has directed several theremin festivals and her tuition video, ’Mastering the theremin’, provides study material for new players of the instrument.
