Sarah Defrise

Belgian soprano Sarah Defrise made her operatic debut in 2014. She performed roles such as Cunegonde (Candide / Bernstein), Clorinda (La Cenerentola / Rossini), the Fairy (Cendrillon / Viardot), Nannetta (Falstaff / Verdi), Musetta (La Bohème / Puccini), Frau Silberklang (Der Schauspieldirektor, Mozart), and Tonina (Prima la musica e poi le parole, Salieri). In October 2017, she was the Young Revelation of the Gent Festival van Vlaanderen and sang with José Van Dam and the Flanders Symphonic Orchestra directed by Jan Latham-Koenig. Defrise was awarded the Best Performer 2018 prize at the Armel International Opera Competition. Sarah Defrise holds a Master in Music and a PhD in the Arts. She actively participated in masterclasses with e.g. Mrs. Barbara Hendricks and Sir Thomas Allen. In September 2020, Defrise made her debut at La Monnaie/De Munt as the lead role in the premiere of Is this the end? by Jean-Luc Fafchamps. In November 2021, she will make her debut in Staatsoper Berlin in Sleepless, Peter Eötvös's new opera.
