Simo Mäkinen

Tenor Simo Mäkinen (born 1982) is a versatile performer who sings opera roles, chamber music, oratorio and modern vocal repertoire. He studied at the Sibelius Academy under Monica Groop and Anssi Hirvonen and with Susanna Eken at the University of Copenhagen. He has also attended various masterclasses given by such eminent performers as Karita Mattila, Elisabeth Werres and Thomas Allen. Mäkinen made his debut at the Finnish National Opera in 2010 in Ilkka Kuusisto’s Gabriel, tule takaisin! (’Come back, Gabriel!’). He is also much in demand as a soloist in oratorio and has performed virtually all the main lyric tenor roles in that field. Mäkinen has performed as soloist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Finnish Baroque Orchestra. He began to establish a basis for his versatile, sound musicianship before his singing career began, when he studied to become a teacher of the violin. He won third prize in 2008 in the Kangasniemi Singing Competition.
