Tommi Wesslund

Tommi Wesslund was born in 1992 and started learning the cello in 1997 at the Porvoo District Music Institute not far from Helsinki. His teachers were Riikka Järvinen and Pekka Untamala. In 2002 he went to the East Helsinki Music Institute where he was taught by Allar Kaasik and Taina Palas. Wesslund began his vocational studies at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki in 2012 as a pupil of Sami Mäkelä and Tapani Heikinheimo. He graduated as a music teacher in 2017. He then went to the Sibelius Academy to do a master’s, first with Roi Ruottnen and now with Tuomas Ylinen. Wesslund then took further studies with Marko Ylönen, Ola Karlsson and Andreas Brantelid. Wesslund plays chamber music frequently and has been deputy leader of the cello section with the Lappeenranta City Orchestra. He has also performed as soloist with various orchestras in Russia, Helsinki and in northern Finland. One recent performance was with the Metropolia Orchestra in spring 2017. Wesslund plays in the Nome Quartet, which is a member of the Kuhmo Chamber Music's Quartet Academy.
