Mozart’s freemason brother Michael Puchberg saved Mozart from financial ruin on more
than one occasion. By way of thanks, Mozart composed Puchberg the following work (the
debt, however, was never paid). Puchberg was a rich entrepreneur working in the textile
industry and an amateur violinist, and it was doubtless for performance by his group of
aristocratic amateurs that Mozart initially conceived the trio, though ultimately it was to
become a cornerstone of the string trio repertoire. The key signature may contain an
amount of symbolism: the three flats of E flat major are strongly associated with traditional
masonic iconography.

W. A. Mozart (1756—1791):

Divertimento in E flat, K. 563 for string trio (1788)
