Sonja Fräki

Sonja Fräki is an active performing pianist. She is known as a soloist as well as an experienced chamber music player. Fräki’s repertoire contains a broad selection from classical to modern music. Her speciality is the piano repertoire of Finnish composer Kalevi Aho, which she has played and performed completely. Sonja Fräki also made her doctoral thesis about Aho’s music. She gained her Ph.D. in music from the University of the Arts’ in Sibelius Academy in the autumn of 2016. Fräki has succeeded in several international piano competitions. In 2008 she won third prize in the Franz Liszt Competition in Wroclaw, Poland. In 2003 she got the firth prize in Franz Schubert Competition in Dortmund, where she also received a special prize for best performance of Schubert’s late sonata. Fräki has been awarded with special prizes at Maj Lind International Piano Competition in Finland and Paderewski Competition in Poland. Sonja Fräki has performed as a soloist in front of multiple orchestras, such as Tapiola Sinfonietta, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, Neue Phiharmonie Westfalen and Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra. Fräki has recorded two solo CDs. The other one had Kalevi Aho’s solo piano repertoire with the record label BIS. Musicweb International chose that CD as their CD of the Month in March 2015. Sonja Fräki has also recorded with BIS Aho’s chamber music and his first piano concerto with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
