Riina Piirilä, born in 1995, began playing the viola when she was six at the Nurmijärvi Music Institute under Taina Evijärvi. In 2010 she started her studies at the Sibelius Academy with Helge Valtonen, and since 2015 she has been a pupil of Lilli Maijala and Atte Kilpeläinen. Piirilä has attended masterclasses given by Bruno Giuranna, Hartmut Rohde and Rainer Moog. Riina Piirilä is an active chamber musician and plays viola with the Borea String Quartet, founded in 2011. The Boreas have appeared at a number of Finnish music festivals, including Kauniainen, Kamarikesä, Hauho and Kuhmo. She has also appeared at the Helsinki Festival and the Rusk Festival in Pietarsaari. She has received tuition in chamber music from Paavo Pohjola, Gerhard Schultz and the Danel Quartet. She has also been an assistant with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Piirilä plays a Leonhard Maussiell viola from 1722 on loan from the OP Art Foundation.
