Riina Piirilä, born in 1995, is studying this academic year (2017-2018) at the Norwegian State Academy of Music under Lars Anders Tomter. She also studied at the Sibelius Academy, where her teachers were Lilli Maijala and Atte Kilpeläinen. She has also attended masterclasses given by Bruno Giuranna, Hartmut Rohde and Rainer Moog. She plays viola with the Borea String Quartet, appearing at a number of Finnish music festivals. Her tuition in the area of chamber music she received from Paavo Pohjola, Gerhard Schultz and the Meta4 and Danel Quartets. In autumn 2017 the Boreas began their studies at the ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy) with Hatto Beyerle and Johannes Meissl. Riina Piirilä has also played as an assistant with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and was one of six finalists in the Tampere National Viola Competition in 2017. She plays a Joannes Florenus Guidantus viola from 1737 from the OP Art Foundation.
