The Abel Quartet was formed in 2013. Its members studied with Christoph Poppen and Hariolf Schlichtig in Munich and Rainer Schmidt in Basel. The group has been successful in many chamber music competitions, coming first in the International Joseph Haydn Competition in Vienna in 2015 and second in the Lyon and August Everding international competitions in 2015 and 2014. In 2016 they won the Sylvia Competition in South Korea and came third in the Geneva International Music Competition. Since its foundation, the Abel Quartet has played a large number of concerts in Dresden, Wörthsee, London, Paris, all over Korea and elsewhere. The ensemble was invited to be quartet-in-residence at the Cassalmaggiore Music Festival in Italy and the Ticino Musica Festival in Lugano, Switzerland. Bavarian Radio has broadcast a concert of their recorded concert at the Days of Chamber Music Festival, and they have also appeared at the Heidelberg String Quartet Festival. The Abels have received guidance and instruction from players in many of the world's leading string quartets, including players from the Artis, Artemis, Alban Berg, Kuss, Apollon Musagète, Talich, Carmina and Casals Quartets. The Abel Quartet is a member of the Kuhmo Chamber Music's Quartet Academy.
